I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. Her name is Shirley. Shirley is a retired nurse whose husband passed away a few years ago. She lives by herself in a three bedroom brick ranch home a few miles away from me. We met about five years ago when I was doing some volunteer work at the local hospital where Shirley worked.

Every now and then we have Shirley over for dinner. She loves to bake and she always brings something that she baked for desert when we get together. I have to admit that she is a great cook.

When Shirley came over for dinner the other day, we were sitting around the dinner table and she brought up something that she knew I could help her out with. She was explaining how at night when she is at home and has to go outside that it was difficult for her to see her way around her house.

You see, Shirley likes to water her lawn and gardens at night. She went on to say that watering after sundown is better for her lawn and garden, because the water has does not evaporate at the surface as quickly as it does in sunlight. This gives her lawn and gardens a better drink of water, as she put it.

What Shirley was leading up to was some sort of advice for lighting up the outside of her home at night. She wanted to be able to see better and not worry about stepping on her flowers while watering.

The first thought that came to me was outside wall lighting. So I asked Shirley if she had any outside wall lighting on her house now. She said she did have a few outside wall lights, but over the years they just stopped working.

So I asked her where these non-working outside wall lights were located. She said she had one on each side of the overhead door of her garage. One wall light on the outside wall along side of her front door and two more outside wall lights on the back wall of her home where her bar-b-q deck is.

She said her main concern was along both sides of her house and not so much the front and rear walls of her home, but that she could replace the old worn outside wall lights that are already there and not operating.

After dinner my husband and Shirley went into our living room to watch some TV. I went off to do some research on Outside Wall Lighting.

My next thoughts were what style of outside wall lighting would go with her light tan brick home. I went to work. Shirley had white vinyl windows around her home, so I was determined to find a style to go with the flow, as they say.

Step 1
The first step is to cut a slit into one side of the juicy lemon, and insert the clean copper coin into it. On the other side, insert the galvanized zinc nail. Ensure that the nail and coin do not touch each other. The coin and nail form the positive and negative electrodes respectively, thereby forming the single cell of the battery. The two oppositely charged electrodes will now permit the flow of electrons through them. The free electrons from the lemon juice will travel from the negative electrode (nail) to the positive electrode (coin).

Step 2
The rate at which the electrons flow is called voltage. The faster the electrons flow, the higher the voltage. The voltmeter will measure the rate of electron flow. If one connects the voltmeter to the electrodes, a voltage of 0.906 volts will be detected. However, this is not enough to light a bulb.

Step 3
To achieve enough voltage to light the bulb, one has to make more lemon batteries and connect them via a metal wire. The metal wire should connect the positive electrodes to the negative ones, and this will add voltage from each cell. Take four lemon batteries and join them together from positive to negative. A total voltage of 3.50 volts will be created, which is enough to light up a small light emitting diode or LED light.

Step 4
At the plastic base of an LED, one will find two wires and a 'flat spot'. The wire just besides the flat spot needs to be connected to the negative side of the battery, while the other wire needs to be connected to the positive terminal. The electrons flow from the nail end to the coin end, thereby forming an electronic circuit which causes the LED to glow dimly.

The above steps on how to make a lemon battery can help one make a lemon battery at home without much effort. LEDs work at even very low voltages (below 2V) and low currents. These LEDs get damaged if connected to batteries over 2 volts. Thus, they require resistors to control batteries which are rated over 2V. Two of the most efficient energy saving light bulbs used in homes are CFL (compact fluorescent) and LED (light emitting diode) bulbs. Both of these bulb types have become more popular as home owners realize the great energy saving benefits. While CFL and LED cost more than the conventional incandescent bulbs, they prove to last much longer. You won't need to replace CFL and LED bulbs as often as incandescent bulbs.

CFL Bulbs
CFL bulbs are compact fluorescent bulbs that have a twisting shape appearance. They are more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs because they produce less heat and last longer. They use 1/3 the electricity and last up to 10 times as long as incandescent bulbs. For example, one, 18 watt CFL in place of one, 75 watt incandescent bulb, will save about 570 Kilowatts (kWh). The average cost of electricity per kWh is 8 cents per kWh. This would yield about a $45 savings for just one bulb (Eartheasy.com). Other advantages of using CFL bulbs include that they help reduce air and water pollution by producing less carbon dioxide (CO2). CFL's provide a higher quality light compared to the bright white light of incandescent bulbs.

Some homeowners fear using CFL bulbs because they contain small amounts of mercury. Electrical safety experts believe that the mercury in a CFL is not dangerous. The only danger associated with a CFL bulb is if it breaks and is not cleaned up and disposed of promptly and properly. Proper clean up consists of sweeping up the glass from the bulb (do not vacuum) and disposing it in regular trash.

LED
LED (light emitting diode) bulbs are used in lamps, small lighting fixtures and for Christmas lights. They are also used in small electronics, such as DVD players, as well as in tiny flashlights. Nowadays, LED bulbs are being used for more residential lighting applications, such as under-cabinet lighting, in recessed lighting fixtures and for landscape lighting applications. LED bulbs have an extremely long lifetime. They can last between 50,000 to 60,000 hours. This is more than four times longer than CFL bulbs. LED bulbs use only 2-10 watts of electricity (1/3 to 1/30 of incandescent or CFL bulbs). As with CFL bulbs, LED's don't produce heat. In 2009, the first LED-based replacements for a traditional light bulb were made available to the public. These bulbs give off an amount of light equivalent to a 40-watt incandescent bulb.
